Everyone must have been very tired last night as it was the first time Paddy has had to yell out to us to “rise and shine”.
We dragged ourselves up and settled in for a cuppa and breakfast in cold conditions. After breaky we all went back to our tents to get dressed and pack up. Once all the cars were loaded and we got our farewell picture we headed off for the day at around 7.45 am.
Paddy had let us know there would be lots of dunes to cross today and the sand would be deeper.
We walked for 12 kms before spotting Paddy and crew set up on the side of the road with lunch. It was starting to get hot and the afternoon was going to be a tough 10 kms before we got to camp.
We stop around every 4 kms for a bit of a 10 min rest, snack and toilet break and then we head off again. There is plenty of time to talk and we are learning lots about each other. We play word games, look for wild camels, have a quizzical comp going on and Ali gives us what we refer to as “book club” where she fills us in on the chapters in the book she read the night before - whatever we can do to pass the time and forget about our feet, we do.
There was so many ups and downs today and the last 4 kms were particularly hard going with hills and heat but we all made it and arrived at camp around 2.30 pm. It was so great to take our shoes off and enjoy a rest and cuppa before starting to put our tents up.
Tonight for dinner we had pasta carbonara and of course our favourite - damper. We all sat around the camp fire and solved the problems of the world from under the beautiful clear skies of the Simpson Desert.
About 7.15 pm we all went to bed. Paddy has warned us that tomorrow is going to be really hot so another tough day ahead but we will all get each other through.
We walked 22.5 kms and cracked the 100 km mark and did 38,800 steps. We also collected another $150 today bringing our donations from people driving through to over $1,000.
Despite seeing lots of footprints and poo, we still haven’t spotted any camels.
