22 days, 440km, 1100 sand dunes all while raising funds and bringing awareness to Jenny’s Place who assist women and children escaping domestic violence and at risk of homelessness.

This Trek for Jenny’s Place is going to be a cracker of a trip. It will have it’s moments when you think “what am I doing here” and then there will be the golden ones when you are sitting on top of a dune, full moon at sunset and not a soul in sight! It will be a trip of surprises and adventures.

Day 8 - (Monday, 22 August)

Today was a tough day!

It was a really hot day with 28 degree heat but because the sun beats down from above and beats up at us from below as it hits the sand it is actually about 35 degree heat.

We decided to do a bigger walk before lunch as it was going to be so hot.  We did 13 kms before we came into our lunch spot.  We were all glad to sit under the shade for a while and eat our lunch and empty our shoes of sand.

Once lunch was over we hit the road again and the heat really had some bite.  The sand dunes are getting bigger and there are lots more of them.  Together we plod up and down dunes.  We stopped every 3 km in the afternoon to have a 10 minute rest.  We finally got into camp after 22.6 km, 40,500 steps and 7 and three quarter hours through the desert.  The last 2 kms were particularly hard and we were all very excited to see Alex’s head pop up in the distance.  It’s the highlight of our day when we get eyes on him as we know our camp will be just over the next dune.

After a good rest and cuppa we all put our tents up, filled up our water bladders and got our gear ready for tomorrow.

Lots of us are excited as we get to change our shirts tomorrow after wearing them for a week !

We all feel like our clothes stink, our hair feels horrible and we constantly have red sand all over us.  The inventor of baby wipes we have decided should win the Nobel Prize.   As we only have water to drink and cook with, baby wipes have become our best friends.

Tonight Tracy Mac from Newcastle Live rang on the satellite phone to get an update on how we are all going.  It will be great for our families and friends to hear from us for the first time since we left.

Paddy and the crew cooked us an Indian dinner tonight and, of course, damper.  We all sat around the fire talking about the day and what is coming up tomorrow before heading to bed at 7.30 pm

Everyone is in good spirits and they are such an awesome group.  I am so very proud of everyone.

Until tomorrow

Donna xx
