22 days, 440km, 1100 sand dunes all while raising funds and bringing awareness to Jenny’s Place who assist women and children escaping domestic violence and at risk of homelessness.

This Trek for Jenny’s Place is going to be a cracker of a trip. It will have it’s moments when you think “what am I doing here” and then there will be the golden ones when you are sitting on top of a dune, full moon at sunset and not a soul in sight! It will be a trip of surprises and adventures.

Day 9 - (Tuesday, 23 August)

Well last night proved to be another interesting night!  We were all in bed by 7.30 pm but at 10.30 we had another sand storm hit us that went on for several hours until around 1.30 am

The grains of sand somehow get through the tents and when the wind is blowing the sand is landing on you and all around you. It’s like you are eating sand whilst trying to sleep and having to clear your pillow constantly throughout the night to put your face in a spot that isn’t covered by sand and grit! This morning it looked like we had a beach in our tents.  Everything was covered in red dust and sand.

We all dragged ourselves out of bed, had breakfast and then started shaking out sleeping bags, mattresses and tents.

The winds really stuck around today and it was even quite cool walking most of the day.  We did almost 15 kms before lunch today.  Given the cooler weather we tried to get some extra kilometres ticked off as there are some hot days coming.

We were very glad to see Paddy and crew set up for lunch and rest our feet and get out of the wind for a little bit.

After lunch we had another 8 kms to knock over and we find of any afternoon everyone’s feet really start to get sore.  The wind was still really strong but we finally spotted camp after completing 23.6 kms over 7.5 hours and having done

42,452 steps.

When we got into camp because it was so windy Paddy told us not to put our tents up for a couple of hours as they would just fill with dust so we just sat around, had a cuppa and enjoyed taking our shoes off and resting.   The temperature had really dropped and we were all getting cold so we ended up finally putting our tents up and getting our thermals on.

Dinner around the campfire was lamb casserole and it was divine.  Alex cooked his first damper tonight and did a great job.

Once again by 7.30 pm we were all in bed.  The wind had finally died down and given we got very little sleep last night, we were hoping it stayed that way and we got a restful night ready to get up and do it all again tomorrow.

Despite seeing more camel tracks, we still have not been able to find one camel.

Just as we were almost asleep we heard someone walking around outside the tents going up and back and up and back.  Eventually a voice called out “is anyone awake”?  Mumma C, Ali and I all yelled back “yes”.  It was Kim once again looking for the toilet- God love her she never seems to be able to find it and searches behind a multitude of bushes.  Ali poked her head outside and pointed her in the right direction.  About 5 minutes later she was back saying “Ali, can you point to it again, I still can’t find it?” We all cracked up with laughter.

Until tomorrow,Donna x
